Mesopelagic organisms are fish, crustaceans, jellyfish, and squid that live in the ocean between 200 and 1000 meters deep - are believed to be one of the world's largest untapped food resources.

These organisms are rich in long-chain marine omega-3 fatty acids and high-quality protein for use as food and feed.

It is important to be able to document levels of foreign substances in new marine resources before potential commercial development is established.

The Institute of Marine Research is underway, and in 2018 we analyzed the content of foreign substances in three species of mesopelagic fish from the Norwegian Sea and the Sognefjord.

Monitoring and mapping of mesopelagic resources is a priority area for the Institute of Marine Research.
