De marine råvarene som laksefôr tradisjonelt har vært laget av, har sørget for at laksen har fått i seg rikelig med langkjedede marine omega-3 fettsyrer (EPA og DHA). Hovedkilden til EPA og DHA er fiskeolje, og fiskemel inneholder også noe, men utover dette finnes det per i dag ingen alternative kilder for de volumene som er nødvendig for oppdrettsnæringen. Økende oppdrett og begrenset tilgang på fiskeolje har gjort at det er umulig å benytte samme høye innhold i fôrene av EPA og DHA som tidligere. Dermed er det kritisk å avklare hvor mye laksen faktisk trenger, hvilke konsekvenser det kan ha for vekst og helse å redusere innholdet i fôrene. I tillegg bør man finne ut hvordan fôrene kan optimaliseres for at laksen i størst mulig grad skal ”spare” på EPA og DHA (ved å forbrenne andre fettsyrer mens disse lagres i kroppen), og lage mer av disse fettsyrene selv, ved å avmette og kjedeforlenge kortere omega-3 fettsyrer som finnes i planteoljer.

Dette har vært hovedområdet for min forskning de siste par årene. Tidligere har jeg jobbet med bruk av genmodifiserte (GMO) planteingredienser i fiskefôr (tok Ph.D.  på dette i 2009). De første årene etter doktorgraden jobbet jeg videre med GMO, og har også vært involvert i forskning på bl.a. mycotoxiner (soppgifter) og mikronæringsstoffer.
