My special interest area is related to early embryonic development in fish and how development is affected by environmental conditions such as nutrition, temperature, or toxicants. The main focus is related to how the different environmental conditions change the potential for gene expression in embryos, i.e. epigenetic changes. I am currently working with salmon, cod and zebrafish.
The main theme of my work is related epigenetics. The field of epigenetics is evolving dramatically, precisely because it is the link between heredity and environment. Epigenetics describes how the environment affects which of the genes that are turned on and off like a light switch. Environmental regulation of the genome can be inherited from the mother and father to the next generation, but how this regulation is controlled in fish is not known. Together with colleagues we study the effect of fish feed and environmental influences on epigenetic regulation of the genome.
