I am working on ocean currents, temperature and salinity in the northern Barents Sea. I investigate long-term variability in the ocean climate and link the variability to driving forces, e.g., wind, air temperature and currents in nearby regions. Lately I've been investigating the warm Atlantic water that enters the Barents Sea from the north. The Atlantic water mass has warmed over the last 20 years and has lead to a warming of the northern Barents Sea. Now my focus is on the layer of cold Arctic water that lays above the Atlantic water and on the freshwater additions to the Arctic layer. It is interesting to see if the Arctic layer has changed during the last decades and to understand the mechanisms of the variability in the Arctic layer. In my research, I mainly use the rich observational data base of the Institute of Marine Research from 1970 to present.
