Curriculum Vitae

I am a Marine Plankton Ecologist. My research interests focus on the role of microbial food webs in the structure and function of marine ecosystems, and their response to climate and human influence. Through a combination of laboratory and fieldwork, I investigated the effects of natural and anthropogenic stressors on microbial physiology, community structure and function, and trophic interactions in several aquatic ecosystems. Due to the central role protists have in in the cycling and transfer of matter and energy, even small changes in their physiological rates and trophic interactions can significantly affect biogeochemical cycles, ecosystem function and biodiversity.
As a seagoing oceanographer I have participated in and planned numerous expeditions ranging from daily to monthly. I’ve gained experience in managing research projects throughout their lifecycle both in the laboratory and in the field. I designed, planned, and executed experimental procedures to measure microzooplankton physiological rates and their trophic and ecological interactions with prey and predators. I have comprehensive knowledge of laboratory analysis, including traditional light and epifluorescence microscopy, FlowCam, FlowCytometry, chemical extractions, and basic molecular techniques to unravel the complex dynamics characterising microbial food webs. I conducted analysis, elaboration, and interpretation of data to produce report compilation and public delivery in peer-reviewed journals, national and international conferences, and outreach events.
