This species also occurs in the northwest Atlantic from southern Greenland to Newfoundland. It is common to observe ling at 300-400m depths. However, they may also occur between 60 and 1000m depths. Young fish commonly occur in relatively shallow coastal areas and on banks, including the northern North Sea. Ling become sexually mature between 5 – 7 years of age.
They are believed to undergo an age- or size-dependent migration to deeper areas and spawning grounds of the North Sea, the Great Edge (Storegga), the Faeroes, banks west of the British Isles, and areas southwest of Iceland.
