IMR’s Research Vessels department

The Research Vessels department manages and operates IMR's research vessels "G.O. Sars", "Johan Hjort", "G.M. Dannevig" and "Kristine Bonnevie" (formerly "Dr. Fridtjof Nansen").

IMR also manages and operates RV "Hans Brattström", owned by the University of Bergen and "Dr. Fridtjof Nansen", owned by Norad. The new RV "Dr. Fridtjof Nansen" left the yard in Spain January 2017 and started the first cruise from Casablanca in West Africa in May 2017.
 
IMR's Research Vessels department shall also staff and operate the new ice-going vessel "Kronprins Haakon" owned by the Norwegian Polar Institute. This vessel was launched in Italy in the spring 2017 and arrived Bergen at the end of the year. 
 
"Håkon Mosby" was removed from the fleet in the autumn 2016 and was replaced by "Kristine Bonnevie".

The Research Vessels department's main tasks

  • Staff, maintain and equipe vessels owned and/or operated by the Institute of Marine Research
  • Acquire, maintain and operate scientific equipment used in the vessels
  • Storage, maintenance and calibration of equipment
  • Enter agreements for renting vessels as required
