Open Access

What is open access?

Open access means giving free access to research on the Internet

Why publish open access?

There are at least three good reasons:

  1. The Norwegian government and EU are discussing how governmentally financed scientific results can be made available free of charge to everyone
  2. It will mean good promotion for institute and scientists with a greater spread
  3. It is o finterest to everyone that countries in the third world can get hold of scientific documentation from our part of the world – also when unable to purchase expensive journals

How to publish open access?

The two main options are:

  1. To publish in open access journals
  2. To archive the documents in a fulltext institutional repository

Which open access journals are there?

Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).The University library in Lund is maintains a list containing ”all” open access journals :
And there are some other subject specific listings, like BioMedCentral (BMC) og Public library of Science (PLOS).
Furthermore, in 2007  Bentham Science Publishers launched 2-300 open access journals  within different disciplines, such as Open Marine Biology journal, Open Fish Science journal, Open Acoustics Journal, Open Oceanography journal, Open Food Science journal and Open Nutrition journal. It is of great interest to see the progress of this large project.

What possibilities are there to publish in an institutional repository articles and scientific results otherwise published?
Permissions given by the publishers vary a lot as to what the author herself can do with her own article.
The SHERPA-ROMEO database shows the different publisher`s copyright policies, also for each journal.
