Catherine Banet

Catherine Banet

Catherine Banet (PhD) is Associate Professor at the University of Oslo, Faculty of Law, Norway. Her core fields of work are energy law, environmental law, competition law, EU/EEA law and law of the sea. She works notably with the energy sector in relation to renewable energy, support schemes, energy markets, energy infrastructures, petroleum activities, climate change, carbon capture and storage (CCS) and seabed resources management. 
 
Catherine Banet has background from private law practice (Norway, France), the European Commission (DG ENV, Belgium), U.S. diplomatic mission and academia. 
 
She is used as a lecturer at international universities (Oslo, Copenhagen, Firenze, Reykjavik and Malta) and is a regular speaker at conferences. She is the author of several books, studies and articles. She acts as consultant for national and international organisations. She is member of several European research networks, board member of a foundation within the renewable energy sector and is member of the expert committee on energy and environmental law of the Norwegian Center for Continuing Legal Education. She is member of the Advisory Academic Group to the International Bar Association (IBA), Section for Energy, Environment and Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law (SERIL).
 
She is currently involved in two book projects related to seabed resources management and coastal  zone management: ‘The Law of the Seabed: - Access, uses and protection of seabed resources’ (BRILL, 2017) (http://www.jus.uio.no/nifs/english/research/projects/oslos/seabed/) ; and the PLANCOAST-project, where she looks at the permitting regime for energy generation in coastal areas and interactions with other regimes. In 2017-2019, she will be coordinating an educational and research project on mineral and mining law between the University of Oslo, Norway and the Cape Town University, South Africa (MENSA).
