Eksperimentelle studier av hvordan vekst og kjønnsmodning hos laks påvirkes av miljøforholdene. I den siste tiden fokus på studier av kjønnsmodne lakseunger (parr), såkalte dverghanner. Dverghanner har blitt testet som stamfisk i kultiveringsøyemed, og utviklingen deres i kar har blitt studert.
Hvilken betydning lakselus kan ha for overlevelsen til utvandrende laksesmolt. Vi foretar årlige utsettinger av laksesmolt som har blitt behandlet mot lakselus i Daleelv (Vaksdal kommune) i Hordaland. Smolten er merket og settes ut ulike steder langs utvandringsruten til smolten fra elven til kysten. Gjenfangstene av voksen laks som kommer tilbake fra havet etter ett eller flere år antyder hvordan overlevelsen har vært ulike år, og fra ulike slippsteder.
Adferd til rømt laks og regnbueørret. En rekke simulerte rømminger har blitt utført fra 2005 for å kartlegge adferd, overlevelse og geografisk spredning av rømt laks. I tillegg er det gjort forsøk med rømt regnbueørret i fjordene ved Osterøy. Hensikten er å få et bedre grunnlag for å vurdere risiko ved rømming når smolt eller voksen fisk stikker av fra oppdrettsmerdene. Fisken har vært merket med vanlige ytre merker, og i noen tilfeller med akustiske sendere. Disse senderne er blitt operert inn i buken på fisken, og sender signaler som må fanges opp av lyttebøyer i fjordsystemet. Akustikk studiene gir et mer nyansert bilde av adferden til rømt fisk i nærområdet, mange av merkene er for eksempel utstyrt med dybdesensor slik at merket også sender informasjon til lyttebøyene om fiskens svømmedyp.
