A complete reference work on marine mammals has been lacking, so the report ”Sjøens pattedyr” was warmly welcomed when published in Norway last year.
The Engslih version arrives just in time for the annual meeting in the IWC Scientific Committe. The meeting opens in Tromsø on Monday 30th of May.
Arne Bjørge from the Institute of Marine Research is the editor of the report. The editorial staff also includes other marine mammal scientists from the IMR, the Norwegian Polar Institute and the University of Oslo.
The report gives a general overview on the different marine mammal species and their evolutionary story. The most important species found in Norwegain waters are touroughly descriped. In addition the report contains seven articles about research topics of current interest. A complete table of all marine mammal species of the world is given in chapter 8.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs have contributed financially to the translation.
