The occasion is the Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) where scientists meet to discuss how to improve plans and coordinate research in the Arctic regions. This year, an international symposium focusing on Arctic Connections - the results of 150 years of research, is included in ASSW.
Eight world leading scientists in the field will give key note talks, and 150 other scientists will give oral presentations.
The purpose of ASSW is to provide opportunities for international coordination, collaboration and cooperation in all areas of Arctic science and to combine science and management meetings. The ASSW also offers insight into Arctic research undertaken by the host country. 17 different side meetings organized by other groups with interests in Arctic science and policy will take place at the same time and place.
The symposium is focusing on these themes:
- Sea Ice changes and the impacts on Biodiversity and Human Communities
- Arctic Climate Variability - Past to Future
- The Role of the Arctic in the Global Change Process
- Evolution of Arctic Ecosystems in a Warming World
- Indigenous Cultures - Past to Future
- Coastal Environments as a link between Land and Sea in the Arctic
- Risks to Human Health from a changing Arctic
- History of Arctic Science
In a time where climate change is a hot issue and Arctic plays an important role, this symposium is very timely. We expect that a lot of new knowledge will be presented.
The symposium venue is Scandic Bergen City, and it is open to the press.
