The Institue of Marine Research has given an expert opinion on the permission to discharge and other petroleum related activities in the area where the massive, old coral reef Sularevet is found. The Sularevet is already protected against bottom trawling.
We know little of how Lopehlia-corals respond to discharges from petroleum related activities.

The coral reef area was protected from bottom trawling by the Ministery of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs in March 1999. Many important reefs - well mapped and described in international studies - are found in the area.
