Lars Walløe has been elected the fifth President of the Academy of Europe

Professor Lars Walløe has been elected the fifth President of the Academy of Europe, Academia Europaea. Walløe will assume the Presidency at the end of the 20th anniversary conference of the Academia, which will take place at Liverpool, September 18 – 20th.


Walløe is special advisor to the Government of Norway regarding management of marine mammals. He has been affiliated to the Institute of Marine Research as part-time professor from 1995 and until 2006, when he became member of the Board of the institute.

Walløe is Professor of physiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Oslo. His main field of research is cardiovascular physiology and his current research is in the field of cardiovascular control mechanisms of man and large mammals. Walløe has developed non-invasive ultrasound techniques based on Doppler effects for such studies.  However, Walløes scientific interests scan an extraordinary wide field of disciplines. He has previously been professor of among others applied statistics and cybernetics. He has published one of the most frequently used handbooks in statistics.  In addition to medicine and statistics, his scientific publications cover topics within history, demography, biology, environmental sciences, and a series of articles on whales and whaling.
