Can salmon “leap away” their lice?

If fish jump up through a layer of “delousing oil” on the surface of a sea cage, such may be an efficient treatment procedure. However, this method has been tested in the past, where one of the problems was infrequent salmon leaping. Now we have discovered that if salmon are prevented from reaching the surface for 1-2 days, they leap much more frequently immediately afterwards.

The committee also suggested a range of measures to strengthen and promote this project, which is based on the mutual trust between fishers and scientists.

Good results with sterile farmed fish

New results show that by adding more phosphorous to the feed of sterile farmed fish, you can prevent them from developing deformities. Farming sterile fish has the potential to solve the problem of escaped farmed fish spawning with wild fish and thus having a genetic impact on wild fish stocks. Sterile fish grow quickly, but are prone to suffer from skeletal deformities, and are less able to withstand high water temperatures, than normal salmon.

The pot is environmentally friendly and easy-to-use, and is well suited to the highly productive temperate waters around the island nation, as well as to tropical seas in general.

The cage environment is the key to salmon production

Researchers are proposing four possible measures to improve the lives of farmed salmon and simultaneously increase production. By releasing feed below the surface and using underwater lights, you can lure the fish away from the sea lice larvae on the surface, and greater monitoring will make it possible to optimise the environment. If simple procedures are also developed to spot abnormal behaviour, fish farmers will be able to discover signs of disease at an earlier stage.
