Sars has now been going on for about one week. The purpose of this first part of the cruise is to complete the mapping of habitats, benthic fauna and pollutants in the Nordland VI area off Lofoten, while in the second part video-filming will take place in the Storegga area and an area between Kristiansund and Halten.

Scientists from the Institute of Marine Research use simple technology in the Lysefjord large scale fjord-laboratory to study how supply of nutrient-rich deeper water to the upper water layers increase micro-algae production during the summer season. New results demonstrate how this increase is converted to mussel growth.

No evidence of eutrophication found

Emissions of dissolved nutrients by the aquaculture industry in Hardangerfjorden and Boknafjorden are probably not so high that they are causing eutrophication. In both of these fjords, the concentration of dissolved nutrients is within the limits of the categories Good and Very Good defined by the Climate and Pollution Agency (Klif). This is the conclusion of an expert group appointed by the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs in consultation with the Ministry of the Environment.

Can salmon “leap away” their lice?

If fish jump up through a layer of “delousing oil” on the surface of a sea cage, such may be an efficient treatment procedure. However, this method has been tested in the past, where one of the problems was infrequent salmon leaping. Now we have discovered that if salmon are prevented from reaching the surface for 1-2 days, they leap much more frequently immediately afterwards.

Good results with sterile farmed fish

New results show that by adding more phosphorous to the feed of sterile farmed fish, you can prevent them from developing deformities. Farming sterile fish has the potential to solve the problem of escaped farmed fish spawning with wild fish and thus having a genetic impact on wild fish stocks. Sterile fish grow quickly, but are prone to suffer from skeletal deformities, and are less able to withstand high water temperatures, than normal salmon.
