DR. PETER RICKETTS
SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Peter Ricketts is Vice-President, Academic and Research and Professor of Geography at Nipissing University, in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, and is also President of the Coastal Zone Canada Association. Prior to joining Nipissing University, Dr. Ricketts was Professor of geography at the University of British Columbia Okanagan in Kelowna, BC Canada. Dr. Ricketts has extensive experience as a senior university administrator, having served as President of Okanagan University College (OUC) from 2004-05 during the transition that saw OUC split into a separate university and college, and Vice-President, Academic of OUC from 2000-04. Prior to joining OUC, he was Dean of Graduate Studies at Dalhousie University (1995-2000) in Halifax, NS and was the first Director of Research at Saint Mary's University (1989-1994), also in Halifax, NS.
Dr. Ricketts is an expert in integrated coastal and ocean management with over 26 years of experience as a researcher and teacher. Dr. Ricketts has just been re-elected to serve a third term as President of the Coastal Zone Canada Association (CZCA), of which he is a founding member. In August 2006, the CZCA held its seventh Coastal Zone Canada conference in Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories. He has published extensively in the fields of coastal and ocean management, strategic environmental assessment, the applications of GIS and information technology to support decision-making in coastal and ocean resource management, maritime boundary delineation, international coastal and ocean issues, and the management of coastal erosion. Dr. Ricketts has acted as a consultant for the Departments of Foreign Affairs, Fisheries and Oceans, and Environment of the Government of Canada and for the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration of the US federal government. Dr. Ricketts has just completed co-editing with Dr. Peter Harrison a special issue of the Coastal Management Journal on Canadian Ocean and Coastal Management. His most recent publications are:

Born in Harrogate, Yorkshire and raised in Bournemouth on the south coast of England, Dr. Ricketts earned his BA (Honours) at the University of Nottingham in 1974 and his PhD from the University of Southampton in 1982. He came to Canada in 1978, and is married to Maryann. They have two children, Sean and Danielle.
