Jeg er forskningssjef for forskningsseksjonen Behov og velferd ved NIFES, og har vært involvert i studier og eksperimenter som omhandler fôrressurser, fiskeernæring, mikronæringsstoffbehov, samt fiskehelse og -velferdsaspekter siden nittitallet. Jeg er sjefredaktør for den internasjonale journalen Aquaculture Nutrition (Wiley-Blackwell, UK) og deltids professor ved Universitetet i Bergen

Fôrmidler representerer om lag halvparten av løpende investering i havbruk, og er tilsvarende betydningsfull for fremtidig verdiskapningen i næringen. Endringer i bruk av råvarer i fôr til fisk kan føre til uforutsette utfordringer i kommersiell oppdrett. Disse beror ofte på næringsstoffmangel som følge av fôrmidlenes ugunstige sammensetning, redusert fordøyelighet eller uventede interaksjoner med miljøparametre. Min forskning har dreid seg om fôrkilder, behov for næringsstoff og såkalte produksjonslidelser, som katarakt, beindeformiteter, tarmhelse, hjertelidelser og andre lidelser hos laks og andre oppdrettsarter. Disse lidelsene er ofte synliggjort i kommersiell oppdrett etter endinger av fôrmidler i næringen. Til forskningen har vi benyttet ulik moderne metodikk, fra genekspresjon, metabolomikk, proteomikk, organkultur og til fisk på populasjonnivå. Ofte må vi hente ekstern spisskompetanse bl.a. fra ulike humane miljø. Forskning og kompetanse som er tilegnet i prosjektene formidles til industri, forvaltning og lovgivende myndigheter, og i undervisning på universitetet i Bergen.


Jeg har deltatt i instituttets klimaforskning med studier av fôrsammensetning og fôringsrutiner under ulike klimarelaterte oppdrettsbetingelser. Målet er å kunne rådgi myndigheter, næring og forvaltning til en riktig håndtering av oppdrett i klimautsatte fjordsystemer og regioner for å ivareta produksjon, fiskens velferd og ikke minst miljø. Forskningsfokuset til nettverket av forskere og prosjekter ved instituttet har til nå har vært å forstå fiskens mestring av klimarelaterte miljøparametre som vanntemperatur og vanngasser ut fra vekst og omsetning, ernæringsstatus, endokrin regulering og helse.


Fiskevelferd og –helse er en viktig del av bærekraftsbegrepet. Seksjonen inkluderer helserelatert forskning knyttet til nye fôrråvarer og endrete oppdrettsbetingelser, både med tanke på revisjon av næringsstoffbehov, ugunstige antinæringsstoffer/toksikanter og introduksjon funksjonelle komponenter i fôret (for å dekke behov, samt helse- og vekstfremmere). Utfordringer her vil være innen antioksidanter og toksikanter og i utforming av egnete helsemarkører.
