The Biological Mechanisms Programme

The overarching objective of this programme is to generate knowledge of biological mechanisms and interactions in key aquaculture species and species in the marine ecosystem, as a long-term basis for sustainable resource utilisation and aquaculture.

Sub-goals:

  • To combine field data, experimental methodologies and models in order to shed light on central biological mechanisms in marine ecosystems.
  • To develop experimental models and new research methodologies.
  • To generate basic knowledge regarding genomes in marine organisms – and to employ functional marine genome research in the study of central mechanisms in organisms that are important in aquaculture and marine ecosystems, as well as to establish databases for genome data and genetic data from marine organisms.
  • To generate basic knowledge about population-genetic divisions of important stocks in marine ecosystems and new population genetic tools.
  • To provide the basic knowledge required for a better understanding of how reproduction and early development are influenced by environmental factors in marine ecosystems and aquaculture.
  • To generate basic knowledge about growth processes and normal development that are relevant to marine ecosystems and aquaculture.
  • To generate basic knowledge about the physiology of stress and sensory biology, with a view to establishing good indicators of fish welfare.
  • To generate basic knowledge about immunology and infectious organisms as a basis for preventive health-care – as well as knowledge of disease in wild populations.
  • To generate basic knowledge about behaviour in aquaculture systems and natural populations.
  • To contribute to academic and popular dissemination of research results and to provide a long-term basis for improved advice provision in the fields of marine ecosystems and aquaculture.
  • To contribute to the implementation of new methods in ecosystem and aquaculture research.
