Vietnam

During the last decade, fisheries management in Vietnam has aimed at developing offshore exploitation in order to reduce fishing pressure in coastal waters, rehabilitation of fisheries, aquaculture development, and providing households with access to aquaculture technology.

A program for cooperation between Norway and Vietnam on the establishment of Vietnam's fisheries legislation was prepared in 1995-1996. The CDCF project activities started in November 1999, based on a close cooperation between the Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries and the Legal Office of FAO.

In November 2003 the Vietnamese national assembly voted a new fisheries legislation developed with the assistance of CDCF.

Phase II: Bringing the Law to Life is the continuation of the support and will further contribute to the sustainable development of Vietnam’s fishery sector and particularly assist the Vietnamese government in improving the legal and regulatory framework and enhancing institutional capability for better management and development of the fisheries sector.
