James E. Overland is a research oceanographer at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in Seattle, WA, USA. Dr. Overland’s interest is in scientific support for decision makers in high latitudes regarding climate and climate impacts on ecosystems. He is a senior scientist with NOAA’s Fisheries Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (FOCI) Project. Within FOCI he advises fisheries scientists and managers on climate change issues.
He is coauthor on a recently completed State of the Arctic Report, a consensus document of 28 international scientists. In 2006 he presented an invited paper in St Petersburg, Russia contrasting the climate forcing of the four major sub-Arctic large marine ecosystems. Since 2005, he has served as Chair of the ESSAS Working Group on Regional Climate Change. During 1990 -1996 he served on the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Committee on the Coastal Ocean; during 1993 – 1994 he served on its Panel on Marine Meteorology. During 1990 – 1994 he was editor for the Journal of Geophysical Research, and in 1986 received the Journal’s Outstanding Reviewer award.
