When it was established in 2005, ESSAS was a Regional Program within GLOBEC and continued until GLOBEC terminated at the end of 2009. ESSAS joined IMBER as a Regional Program in the summer of 2009 and will remain solely with IMBER now that GLOBEC has sunseted. Both GLOBEC and IMBER are IGBP programs.
The intergovernmental scientific organizations of PICES in the Pacific and ICES in the Atlantic have been supportive of ESSAS activities including co-sponsoring with ESSAS symposia, theme sessions, and workshops. PICES has also funded some of their members to attend Annual ESSAS meetings.
The Research Council of Norway and the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen Norway share the cost of operating the ESSAS Project Office in Bergen.
