Curriculum Vitae

Much of my work is on statistical analysis and modelling of the impact of ocean climate variability on the population dynamics of Northeast Atlantic fish stocks. I work on major fish populations, including cod and herring in the Barents, Norwegian and North Seas in addition to climate effects on ecology more generally. I contribute to cross-cutting review articles and books exploring similarities and differences among different fish populations and areas as well as between aquatic and terrestrial systems.

Ottersen currently leads several projects, including the recently started CodDINA (Cod: DIet and food web dyNAmics; Research Council of Norway, 7.5 million NOK 2016-2019). He leads WP6 “Applications of iAOS towards Stakeholders” in the H2020 project Intaros – (Integrated Arctic observation system, European Commision H2020 BG-09 RIA. 15 M Euro over 2016-2021, WP6 ca 3.5 M Euro).

I am a subject editor for PLOS ONE and Progress in Oceanography, earlier for Climate Research and Marine Biology Research. I have also co-edited several special issues of journals including Progress in Oceanography, Climate Research, and Marine Biology Research.
I act as referee for around 20 journals in addition to organizations as NERC (UK), NSF (USA), AGU (USA) and IIASA (International)

I am first or co-author of 59 peer review journal articles, as listed in Thompson Reuters Web of Science Core Collection, including publications in high ranking journals like Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science USA, and Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. My most referred articles are currently cited respectively 949, 437 and 408 times. I have a (WoS CC) H-index of 27 and a ResearchGate score of 40.1. I have written or contributed to several refereed book chapters and numerous non-refereed papers and reports.
