Bergen is proud to welcome you to the Annual Science Conference 2012. Bergen is located in the county of Hordaland on the west coast of Norway. It is easy to get here, with direct flights from London, Amsterdam and Copenhagen that take only an hour and a half. Bergen is a unique city. The connection between nature and business is evident, especially the connection the region has to the sea. No county in Norway exports more than Hordaland. Bergen is Norway’s main maritime city.
With a staff of almost 700 the Institute of Marine Research is Norway's largest centre of marine science. Our main task is to provide advice to Norwegian authorities on aquaculture and the ecosystems of the Barents Sea, the Norwegian Sea, the North Sea and the Norwegian coastal zone.
IMR's headquaters are in Bergen, but important activities are also carried out at our department in Tromsø, at the research stations in Matre, Austevoll and Flødevigen and on board our research vessels, which are at sea for a total of 1600 days a year. The aim of research and management advice provided by IMR is to ensure that Norway's marine resources are harvested in a sustainable way.
